Background of the Study
Regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining health and well-being, particularly among the elderly. In Sokoto State, however, elderly populations often lead sedentary lifestyles due to a combination of cultural, economic, and health-related factors. Physical activity has been linked to improved cardiovascular health, better mobility, and reduced risks of chronic diseases, yet many elderly individuals in Sokoto do not engage in sufficient exercise (Aliyu, 2023). Contributing factors include limited access to safe recreational spaces, social isolation, and a lack of targeted public health initiatives that promote active aging.
In many communities, traditional roles and cultural norms may discourage elderly individuals from participating in physical activities, as such practices are not always prioritized. Additionally, economic constraints and inadequate healthcare support can limit opportunities for exercise, further contributing to a decline in physical function and an increased risk of falls and injuries (Ibrahim, 2024). The aging population in Sokoto is growing, and there is an urgent need to address the barriers to physical activity to improve health outcomes and quality of life among the elderly.
This study aims to assess physical activity levels among elderly populations in Sokoto State by exploring current activity patterns, identifying barriers, and evaluating the relationship between physical activity and overall health. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to capture the lived experiences of the elderly. The findings are expected to provide insights that will inform public health policies and community-based interventions aimed at promoting active aging and reducing the burden of chronic diseases among elderly populations (Bello, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
In Sokoto State, low levels of physical activity among the elderly contribute to a range of health issues, including decreased mobility, higher incidence of chronic diseases, and increased risk of falls. Despite the known benefits of regular exercise, many elderly individuals remain sedentary due to environmental, social, and economic barriers. The lack of safe recreational facilities, compounded by cultural attitudes that may undervalue physical activity in old age, creates significant challenges for promoting active lifestyles among the elderly (Aliyu, 2023).
Furthermore, healthcare services in Sokoto State are often inadequate in providing guidance and support for elderly physical activity. Limited community programs and a shortage of trained professionals in geriatric health leave many older adults without the necessary resources to engage in regular exercise. This situation not only deteriorates physical health but also negatively impacts mental well-being, contributing to social isolation and depression (Ibrahim, 2024). The existing gap in data regarding the actual levels of physical activity among the elderly further complicates efforts to design effective interventions.
This study seeks to address these challenges by systematically assessing physical activity levels among the elderly in Sokoto State, identifying key barriers, and evaluating the impact on health outcomes. The insights gained from this research will be crucial for developing targeted community programs and policy interventions that encourage active aging, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life for elderly populations.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on elderly populations (aged 60 and above) in urban and rural areas of Sokoto State. Data will be collected via surveys, focus group discussions, and health assessments. Limitations include potential recall bias and variability in physical activity measurement.
